Herbert Wade was born on 16 August 1886, the son of Charles Herbert Wade. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank.

 

Early in the First World War Wade left his job at the bank's Nottingham Smiths Bank branch to join the army. He served for some time as a Private in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) before being commissioned into the Machine Gun Corps. He was a recipient of the Military Cross.

 

Lieutenant Herbert Wade was killed in action in France on 2 November 1918, just over a week before the signing of the Armistice. He was 32 years old.

 

Herbert Wade is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
