Idris Charles Williams was born in Newport, Monmouthshire, in 1899, the son of the Reverend David H Williams and his wife Margaret. In 1915 Williams followed in the footsteps of his older brother Lawrence, who was already a bank clerk, and started an apprenticeship at Cardiff Docks branch of National Provincial Bank of England.

 

During the First World War Williams joined the army, and by 1918 was a Corporal in the Cheshire Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 27 June 1918. He was 19 years old.
