John Fraser Ward was born in Balham, London, on 27 February 1898, the son of John Joseph Martin Ward and his wife Violet Mabel. In December 1915, when he was 17 years old, Ward went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In December 1916 Ward left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to go on active service in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Able Seaman John Fraser Ward of HMS Sarnia was killed on 12 September 1918 when his vessel was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Mediterranean. He was 20 years old.

 

John Ward is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
