John Howe Watts was born on 25 May 1894, the son of Thomas Watts, a farmer, and his wife Alice. In October 1910, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Ledbury branch. He was later promoted to a clerkship there.

 

In the first week of September 1914 Watts joined the army. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Herefordshire Regiment. He was killed in action in Palestine on 6 November 1917. He was 23 years old.
