Newnham Liebman Winstanley was born in January 1895, the eldest son of Newnham and Bertha Winstanley. He was educated at Victoria College, Jersey, where he was particularly remembered as a fine cricketer.

 

Winstanley worked for Parr's Bank at its Jersey branch, but early in the First World War he left his job to join the army. He was commissioned into the South Staffordshire Regiment and trained with them in Jersey, before leaving for the Western Front in August 1916. Second Lieutenant Winstanley was killed in action in France between 13 and 15 November 1916. He was 21 years old.

 

Newnham Winstanley is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Jersey branch where his name is spelt Neunham Winstanley.
