Percy Gerald Williams was born in Plumstead, Kent, in 1897, the son of Percy Howard Williams, a mercantile clerk and later commercial traveller, and his wife Edith. The family later moved to Hazel Grove, near Manchester. After leaving school Williams went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co.

 

During the First World War Williams joined the navy, serving as a Clerk (Assistant Paymaster) on board HMS Russell. He died on 27 April 1916 when the Russell was sunk by a mine off Malta. He was 19 years old.
