Thomas Watson was born in Ayrshire in 1896, the son of James and Margaret Watson. In January 1911, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Ayr branch.

 

During the First World War Watson left the bank to go on military service as a Private, initially in the Ayrshire Yeomanry and later in the Machine Gun Corps. He died of disease in Egypt on 8 January 1917. He was 21 years old.

 

Thomas Watson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh
