James Cecil Young was born in Birkenhead in 1898, the son of William Young, a baker and confectioner, and his wife Margaret. In December 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Parr's Bank.

 

In October 1916 Young left his job at the bank's Birkenhead Charing Cross branch to join the army, and by 1918 he was serving as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 6 April 1918. He was 19 years old.
