Alan Ablett

Alan William Ablett was born on 28 September 1919, the son of Frank Ablett and his wife Florinda. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in September 1936, and from August 1937 was based at the bank's Gillingham, Kent branch. Outside work he was a keen all-round sportsman, playing cricket, football and hockey; he represented the country in the bank's 'Town v Country' annual hockey match. He was also a territorial soldier. 

 

At the outbreak of war in 1939 Ablett left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Corporal in the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment 7th Battalion. He was killed in action at Albert, France on 21 May 1940. He was 20 years old.

 

Alan Ablett is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Gillingham Kent branch.
