Eric Thomas Anderton was born on 11 February 1909, the son of Arthur and Ethel Anderton. He was educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank  in 1927 at Teignmouth branch. He moved to Newark branch in 1931 and to Bristol branch in 1935. 

 

As Britain prepared for war in the late 1930s Anderton took up air raid precaution work and soon became an air raid warden. He worked in this capacity through many of the heavy raids endured by Bristol and the surrounding district. 

 

In July 1942 he left the bank to go on full time war service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was promoted to Pilot Officer (ground staff) in October 1943 and to Flying Officer in 1944. Flying Officer Anderton was killed by enemy action in France on 17 December 1944. He was 35 years old and left a widow, Constance, whom he had married in 1937.
