Eric Armitage

Bank: Westminster Bank

Place of work: Bridlington branch

Died: 24 August 1944

Eric Leonard Armitage was born on 11 March 1923, the son of Leonard Shaw Armitage and his wife Annie Amelia. He was educated at Bridlington School and joined the staff of Westminster Bank in April 1940, straight from school, at its Bridlington branch.

During the Second World War Armitage left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. By 1944 he was a pilot based at a maintenance unit on Malta, tasked with delivering aircraft to operational bases in the Mediterranean.

Warrant Officer Armitage was killed on 24 August 1944, when he was part of a formation delivering planes to mainland Italy. The formation flew into a heavy storm and Armitage's plane disappeared; it was presumed that he had crashed into the sea. He was 21 years old.
