John Brown Anderson was born in Edinburgh in 1911, the son of Harry and Helen Anderson. He worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland at its Edinburgh Piershill branch. 

 

During the Second World War Anderson left the bank to go on active service as an Ordinary Seaman in the Royal Navy. He was serving on board HMS Belmont on 31 January 1942, when it was sunk by a German U-boat. Anderson, along with the rest of the crew, was killed. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Jean.
