Kenneth Benjamin Ashdown was born on 13 October 1914, the son of Harry and Lilian Ashdown. He was educated at Colfe Grammar School, Lewisham. He joined the staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in June 1936 at its head office in Lombard Street, London. In 1940 Ashdown left the bank to go on war service, and by 1943 he was a Captain in the Royal Artillery on active service in Italy. He was killed in action there on 20 January 1944. Captain Ashdown was 29 years old and left a widow, Doreen, whom he had married in 1941.
