Samuel Penrith Atkinson was born on 3 September 1907, the son of Robert and Charlotte Atkinson. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Millom branch in June 1927.  He worked at a number of branches including Ulverston, Carnforth and Barrow before moving to Preston 35 Fishergate branch in July 1939. 

In July 1941 Atkinson left the bank to go on military service, joining the Scots Guard. Corporal Atkinson was killed in Italy on 30 January 1944. He was 36 years old.
