Thomas Denison Ambler was born on 28 September 1920, the son of Thomas and Constance Ambler. He was educated at New College, Harrogate and St Peter's School, York. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at York branch in January 1939 and was promoted to junior clerk in April 1939.

 

On the outbreak of war in September 1939, Ambler left the bank to go on war service, joining the West Yorkshire Regiment. He later transferred to the Parachute Regiment of the Army Air Corps. Lieutenant Ambler was reported missing on 13 June 1943 and was later found to have drowned in a training accident that day. He was 22 years old and left a widow, Margaret (Peggy), whom he had married in 1942.
