Alfred Henry Butterfield was born on 3 August 1904, the son of Eliza Jane and Alfred Beaumont Butterfield. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank as a messenger at its head office on Lothbury, London in August 1925.

 

In July 1941 Butterfield left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Leading Aircraftman in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis on 13 August 1943. He was 39 years old and left a widow, Kathleen Annie, whom he had married in 1939.
