Edward George Burton was born on 16 July 1920, the son of George Edward and Florence May Burton. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in March 1938, and from May 1940 was based at Derby Iron Gate branch. 

 

In October 1940 Burton left the bank to go on war service, becoming a pilot in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flight Sergeant Burton was killed during air operations over Germany on 29 August 1942. He was 22 years old and left a widow, Stella, whom he had married in summer 1941.

 

Edward Burton is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Derby St Peter's Street branch.
