Edward Thomas William Byford was born on 1 October 1924, the son of Edward Thomas and Dorothy Mary Byford. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in August 1941, and from December that year was based at the bank's Orpington branch. 

 

In April 1943 he left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Sergeant (Air Gunner) in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed during air operations over Germany on 24 March 1944. He was 19 years old.
