Gordon Herbert Bairstow was born on 24 June 1922, the son of Major Herbert Daniel Bairstow and his wife Elsie. He was educated at Epsom College and joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Ewell branch in May 1940. 

 

Five months later Bairstow left the bank to join the Royal Armoured Corps (Royal Tank Regiment), in which his father had served during the First World War. He was commissioned in October 1942, and by April 1943 was on active service in North Africa, attached to the Leeds Rifles, RAC. He was wounded in action and died of his injuries on 23 April 1943. He was 20 years old, and was posthumously mentioned in dispatches.
