Gregory Bernard Brooker was born on 27 June 1914, the son of Herbert and Mary Brooker. He was educated at Sacred Heart School, Battersea. He joined the staff of Glyn, Mills & Co in October 1931 at its Holt & Co office. 

 

In March 1941 Brooker left the bank to go on war service. He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, undergoing training in America. In October 1942 he received his commission as a Pilot Officer and was promoted to Flying Officer and later Flight Lieutenant in 1943. On the night of 19-20 October 1944, Brooker's Mosquito was lost while taking part in a raid over Stuttgart, Germany. Flight Lieutenant Brooker was 30 years old and left a widow, Betty, whom he had married in 1940.
