John Archibald Barnes was born on 5 November 1916, the son of Archibald and Eveline Barnes. He was educated at Lewes County School for Boys, Ryde School on the Isle of Wight and Weymouth College. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Eastbourne branch in April 1935. He was promoted to junior clerk in July 1935 and moved to Brighton branch in January 1936, where he became a clerk in July 1937.

 

In May 1940 Barnes left the bank to go on war service. By 1942 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, on attachment to the Royal Indian Army Service Corps in India. He died there on 19 November 1942. He was 26 years old.
