Joseph Barber

Bank: National Provincial Bank

Place of work: Overseas branch, London

Died: 1 November 1940

Joseph George Samuel Barber was born on 2 November 1880, the son of John and Esther Barber. He was educated at Aldeburgh National School. He joined the staff of Union of London & Smiths Bank in July 1900 at its head office branch on Princes Street, London. He subsequently moved to the bank's Overseas branch. During the First World War he was away on military service from June 1917 to February 1919.

By the time Barber returned to the bank after being demobilised, National Provincial Bank of England had amalgamated with Union of London & Smiths Bank to become National Provincial & Union Bank of England. A few years later this long name was shortened to National Provincial Bank. Barber remained in the bank's Overseas office, and by 1933 was listed as senior clerk there.

Barber died at home at 6 The Drive, Buckhurst Hill on 1 November 1940 when the street was hit by an enemy bomb during the London Blitz. He was 59 years old and left a widow, Florence.
