Joseph Desmond Bowmer was born on 15 November 1920, the son of Matthew Bowmer. He was educated at Liverpool Institute and King Edward VII School, Sheffield. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Sheffield High Street branch in August 1938 and was promoted to junior clerk in November 1938.

 

In November 1940 Bowmer left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flying Officer Bowmer was killed on 11 February 1944 whilst on operational flying duties. He was 23 years old.
