Joseph Godfrey Brown was born on 26 August 1910, the son of Joseph and Laura Brown. He was educated at Belle Vue Secondary School, Bradford. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Bingley branch in March 1937. He was promoted to junior clerk in June 1927 and to clerk in July 1929. He moved to Skipton branch in October 1931 and to Bradford Commercial Bank branch in April 1935. 

 

In February 1941 Brown left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. After training in the United States and Canada he was commissioned in January 1943, and went on to serve in Africa, Italy and England. Flight Lieutenant Brown was killed on an operational flight on 24 February 1945. He was 35 years old.
