Leslie Vernon Carey Brooker was born on 14 August 1922, the son of Leslie Brooker, a bank clerk, and his wife Doris. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank on his 17th birthday in August 1939, working at the bank's London Mile End branch. 

 

In September 1940 Brooker left the bank to join the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, training as a pilot. Sergeant Brooker was killed on 30 March 1943 when his spitfire crashed in North Africa. He was 20 years old and left a widow, Dolly, whom he had married the previous October.
