Peter Baird

Peter Baird was born on 20 March 1909. In July 1924, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Bathgate branch. In April 1930 he transferred to the bank's London office, and the follow year moved to London Western branch. In December 1938 he returned to Scotland, working at Lanark branch.

 

Baird left the bank to go on military service in September 1941, becoming an Aircraftman in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was working as ground crew at Grangemouth when he was killed in an accident on 31 October 1942. He was 33 years old.

 

Peter Baird is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
