Roger William Burton was born on 28 October 1913, the son of William and Cathrine Alice Burton. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in October 1930, working initially at London West End Office. He later worked at Cheapside branch, before being posted to Waltham Cross branch in September 1937. He was a member of the bank's staff sports club.

 

He joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1937, and in March 1939, some months before the outbreak of war, was released from the bank for full-time training as a pilot. He gained his wings shortly before his fighter squadron was posted to France in May 1940. In his first engagement with the enemy he shot down two Heinkels, but a few days later, on 20 May 1940, he was killed during air operations over France. Pilot Officer Burton was 26 years old.
