Stanley Baker was born on 12 September 1911, the son of Alfred and Fanny Baker. He was educated at Grimsby Wintringham Secondary School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank in December 1927 as a probationer at Market Rasen branch. He was promoted to junior clerk a few months later and to clerk in April 1930. He moved to Harrogate branch in July 1934 and to Colchester branch in May 1938.

 

In October 1940 Baker left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Horse Artillery. Gunner Baker was killed in action in Libya on 4 June 1942. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Dorothy.
