Thomas Ronald Bowyer was born on 23 July 1919 in Barnton, Cheshire, the son of Thomas and Jane Bowyer. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Northwich branch in May 1938. He moved to Northwich Market Street branch in November 1938 and back to Northwich branch in December 1939. He took a course in wireless training from November 1939 until August 1940, as he was interested in joining the Royal Navy.

 

In October 1940 Bowyer left the bank to join the Royal Navy. On 24 May 1941 HMS Hood, on which Bowyer was serving, was sunk during the Battle of Denmark Strait with the loss of all but three on board. Ordinary Telegraphist Thomas Bowyer was 21 years old.
