William Burchnall

William Steward Burchnall was born in London on 24 September 1893, the son of Catherine Elizabeth and Henry George Burchnall. As a young man he worked as an engineer's clerk but in his late twenties he became a messenger at the London office of National Bank of Scotland, where his father had previously been head messenger. 

 

In 1936 Burchnall's wife of 20 years, Helena, died, leaving William, their 18 year old daughter and 12 year old son.

 

Burchnall was killed at home, 142 Hornchurch Road, during an air raid on 22 September 1940. He was 46 years old.

 

William Burchnall is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh
