Alan Ramsay Cook was born on 11 April 1921, the son of Alfred and Susan Cook. He was educated at King James I Grammar School, Bishop Auckland. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Richmond, Yorkshire branch in April 1938. He was promoted to junior clerk in July 1938 and to clerk in July 1940. Outside work he excelled at numerous outdoor sports, and was remembered as a particularly fine tennis player.

 

In November 1940 Cook left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He completed his training in the United States of America and received his commission on his return to England in February 1942. He was posted to Coastal Command, serving on the Atlantic Patrol. Pilot Officer Cook was killed on 22 August 1942 when his aircraft was lost on an anti-submarine patrol from RAF St Eval, with the loss of all 6 crew members. He was 21 years old.
