Alfred Lawrence Cunnington was born on 17 November 1914, the fourth child of Harry Cunnington, a soldier, and his wife Dorothy. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in April 1938, working as a messenger in the trustee department at its head office on Lothbury, London. 

 

In July 1940 Cunnington left the bank to go on war service, becoming a Stoker in the Royal Naval Patrol Service. He was killed on 3 February 1941 when his ship, HM Trawler Arctic Trapper, was bombed. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Irene Mary, whom he had married in 1939.
