Anthony Clifford Le Hunte Cockbain was born on 14 December 1912, the son of Thomas and Edith Cockbain. He worked for Glyn, Mills & Co at its Child & Co office. 

In 1940 Cockbain left the bank to go on war service and joined the 11th Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps. Lieutenant Cockbain was killed in action in the Middle East on 28 November 1942. He was 29 years old and left a widow, Averil, whom he had married in 1941.
