Arthur Colin Crofton was born on 11 July 1915, the son of Arthur and Ethel Crofton. He was educated at Tonstall School, Sunderland and Bedford School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Sunderland branch in May 1933. He was promoted to junior clerk in August 1933 and to clerk in October 1935. He moved to Ilkley branch in September 1936.

 

In November 1940 Crofton left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Pilot Officer Crofton was shot down by flak and killed in Egypt on 19 July 1942. He was 27 years old.
