Ian Harper Courtney was born on 26 September 1911, the son of Fred and Wilhemina Courtney. He was educated at Roan School, Greenwich. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at London Cornhill branch in March 1938. He was promoted to junior clerk in June 1928 and to clerk in July 1930. He subsequently worked at Marylebone High Street and Eltham branches before moving to Oxford Street branch in July 1936. Outside work he was a keen member of the bank's staff Dramatic Society.

 

Courtney had an interest in aircraft and joined the Royal Observer Corps in 1938. In March 1941 he left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He became a commissioned officer and by 1943 held the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He was killed in a flying accident on 11 November 1943. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Elsie, and two daughters.
