John Herbert Arthur Cox was born on 14 September 1919, the son of Arthur and Mary Cox. He was educated at Moseley Secondary School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Birmingham Aston Manor branch in January 1936. He was promoted to junior clerk in April 1936 and to clerk in April 1938. He moved to Banbury branch in July 1938. 

 

In September 1939 Cox left the bank to go on war service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was injured on 7 December 1941 when his Wellington crashed during landing after a training flight from RAF Wellesbourne Mountford. Sergeant Cox was taken to hospital and died of pneumonia almost 2 months later on 6 February 1942. He was 22 years old.
