Henry Wharton Derbyshire was born on 9 March 1912, the son of Henry and Eleanor Derbyshire. He joined the staff of Westminster Bank in September 1929, and from October 1939 was based at the bank's Bakewell branch. 

 

In May 1940 he left the bank to go on war service, becoming an officer in the Staffordshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps. He served in North Africa, and was posted to Normandy six days after D-Day in 1944. He was wounded, but after recovering in England returned to Europe, where he was killed on 24 March 1945, shortly after crossing the Rhine and just two days after being mentioned in dispatches for his gallant and distinguished services in North West Europe. Lieutenant Derbyshire was 33 years old and left a widow, Edith.
