John Heseltine Dodd was born on 25 February 1912, the son of John and Elizabeth Dodd. His father, John Dodd, was killed at sea during the First World War when John Heseltine Dodd was 3 years old. 

 

He joined the staff of Manchester & County Bank as a junior at its Manchester Corn Exchange branch in February 1928. He was promoted to clerk at Manchester 55 King Street branch the next year. In 1935 County Bank, as it was then known, was taken over by District Bank and Dodd became an employee of that bank. In 1938 he moved to Tideswell branch. 

 

In January 1940 Dodd left the bank to go on military service. By 1944 Dodd was a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Service Corps, on active service in North Africa. He was killed in action there on 15 April 1944. He was 32 years old and left a widow, Kathleen, and a three-year-old daughter.
