Lennox Durham was born on 25 February 1912, the son of Lennox and Elizabeth Durham. He was educated at Urmston Grammar School and joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Sale branch in August 1938.

 

In June 1940 Durham left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. By 1944 he held the rank of Flying Officer, and in that year was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. On 25 April 1944 he was part of the crew of a Lancaster bomber which was hit by flak over Germany and broke in half. Flying Officer Durham was reported missing, and later presumed to have died. He was 24 years old and left a widow, Isabel, whom he had married in December 1943.
