Bernard William Fairley was born on 14 December 1916, the son of Anne and William John Fairley. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at its London head office in July 1933. 

 

In October 1939 Fairley left the bank to go on military service in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. On the morning of 12 August 1941 Able Seaman Fairley was killed at sea after his ship, HMS Picotee, was torpedoed by a U-boat. He was 24 years old.
