David James Finlay was born on 1 October 1923, the son of James and Ellen Finlay. He joined the temporary wartime staff of Westminster Bank at its Newton Heath branch in June 1941.

He later left the bank to join the Royal Navy, training as a Telegraphist. He died on 20 June 1945 at Devonport, while awaiting a posting. He was 21 years old.
