John Gordon Forbes was born in Edinburgh in 1913, the son of Alexander and Annie Hunter Forbes. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and worked for Commercial Bank of Scotland.

 

During the Second World War he left his job in the bank's chief London office on Lombard Street to go on military service, becoming a Flying Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed on active service on 4 December 1940. He was 27 years old.
