Roderick John Fraser was born on 28 July 1912, the son of James and Henrietta Fraser. In June 1929, shortly before his 17th birthday, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Munlochy branch. In April 1934 he transferred to London Bishopsgate office. 

 

In September 1939 Fraser left the bank to go on military service, and by 1943 he was a Lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders, attached to the 8th Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. In March 1943, while serving in North Africa, he was awarded the Military Cross for great devotion to duty in the face of the enemy. The following month, on 23 April 1943, he was killed in action. He was 30 years old. 

 

Roderick Fraser is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
