Alan John Griffiths was born on 29 June 1920, the son of John and Mary Ann Griffiths. He was educated at Calday Grange Grammar School and joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Trafford Park branch in May 1937. He moved to Liverpool Water Street branch in February 1939. 

 

In November 1940 Griffiths left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Sergeant Pilot Griffiths was killed, along with four fellow crewmen, when their Wellington bomber crashed in Cornwall on 7 January 1942. He was 21 years old.
