Claude Galliard Gibson was born on 1 January 1910, the son of Jessie Florence and Edward Galliard Gibson. He was educated at Kings College Choir School, Cambridge and Cranbrook School. In January 1928 he joined the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Grimsby Docks branch, having been introduced to the bank by his father, who worked as cashier at Grimsby branch. He was promoted to junior clerk in April 1928 and to clerk in July 1930. He moved to Wisbech branch in November 1931, to Bedford branch in November 1935, and to Staines branch in August 1938. 

 

Gibson left the bank to go on military service in September 1939, serving in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 9 April 1941 Pilot Officer Gibson was flying a Blenheim IV with Coastal Command when his plane was shot down off the Norwegian coast. He was 31 years old.
