John Kenneth Gregory was born on 21 March 1922, the son of Norman H and Dorothy E Gregory. He was educated at King James I Grammar School, Bishop Auckland, before joining the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Durham branch in July 1939. He was promoted to junior clerk in October 1939. 

 

Gregory left the bank in November 1940 to go on war service in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 1 October 1942, while on a mission to Flensburg with the 78th Squadron, Sergeant Gregory was killed in an air crash near Schleswig. He was 20 years old.
