Joseph Barker Goodwin was born on 7 November 1910, the son of Joseph Edward and Evangeline Goodwin. He joined the staff of District Bank as a junior at its Rugeley branch in February 1928. He was promoted to clerk at Shrewsbury branch in 1934. In June 1939 he joined the anti-aircraft section of the Territorial Army.

 

In September 1939 Goodwin left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 13 February 1945 Flight Lieutenant Goodwin was killed when the Dakota aircraft he was flying crashed into the side of a mountain in bad weather in India. He was 34 years old.
