Ralph Harrison Groom was born on 7 May 1920, the son of George Andrew and Edith Florence Groom. He was educated at Gunnersbury Grammar School before joining the staff of National Provincial Bank as a probationer at Aldwych branch in October 1937. He was promoted to junior clerk in January 1938 and to clerk in January 1940.

 

In September 1940 Groom left the bank to go on military service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. On 17 July 1942 while fighting in North Africa, Pilot Officer Groom was reported missing after his aircraft failed to return from an operational flight. He was later presumed to have died on that date. He was 22 years old.
