Alexander Hogarth was born on 19 February 1909, the son of William and Martha Hyslop Hogarth. In May 1927, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for the Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Saltcoats branch. In June 1938 he transferred to Paisley branch; in 1939 to Glasgow Calton and Bridgeton branch; and in April 1940 to Milngavie branch.

 

In September 1941 Hogarth left the bank to go on war service. By 1944 he was a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He died at Karachi, India (now Pakistan) on 18 November 1944. He was 35 years old and left a widow, Winifred, whom he had married in 1942.

 

Alexander Hogarth is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
