Arnold Hallewell was born on 11 February 1921, the son of Vernon Harcourt Hallewell and Gertrude Alberta Colville Hallewell. He was educated at Acland Central School and Owen's School. He joined the staff of National Provincial Bank straight from school as a probationer in February 1938 at London Lower Clapton Road branch. He was promoted to junior clerk in May 1938. 

 

On the outbreak of war in September 1939 Hallewell left the bank to go on war service, joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and becoming an air gunner. On 1 November 1942 Sergeant (Air Gunner) Hallewell was listed as missing, believed killed after the aircraft in which he was serving did not return from a mission over France. It was later concluded that he had died on that day. He was 21 years old.
